I like a centre serving of around eight inches in length but very many archers prefer a much shorter serving - just enough for three fingers and the arrow nock. In the end it's personal choice, though a longer serving adds weight to a bowstring and if you are interested in peak performance from your bow you may wish to consider a shorter serving. I serve one using a serving tool, the other entirely by hand. Serving is a tight spiral wrap of thread in the centre section of the bowstring providing protection for the string from abrasion and also providing a secure fit to arrow nocks.
