Michigan has 3,288 miles of Great Lakes shoreline — more coastline than California and Florida combined. The state borders four of the five Great Lakes, and no matter where you're standing, you're never more than 6 miles from a lake and never more than 85 miles from a Great Lake. ❓ HOW MANY LAKES DOES MICHIGAN HAVE? Michigan has 11,000+ inland lakes, plus 36,000 miles of rivers and streams. Lake Michigan's freshwater dunes are the world's largest — reaching 450 feet at Sleeping Bear Dunes, named America's most beautiful place by Good Morning America. ❓ IS MICHIGAN GOOD FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES? Yes. 103 state parks, 4 million acres of state forest (largest in the U.S.), 13,000 miles of trails, and #3 in the U.S. for recreational boats. The DNR stocked 19 million fish last year across 154 species. ❓ HOW GRAY IS MICHIGAN WEATHER REALLY? Detroit averages only 75 fully sunny days per year versus the U.S. national average of 196. Grand Rapids gets 64 sunny days and 205 overcast days — the 4th cloudiest city in America. Studies from Michigan State University show 20–40% of Michigan residents experience seasonal blues November–March. ❓ HOW MUCH DOES IT SNOW IN MICHIGAN? Metro Detroit averages 45–60 inches per year, Grand Rapids 78 inches (lake-effect), Traverse City 101 inches, and parts of the Upper Peninsula get 250–300 inches. ❓ WHAT IS MICHIGAN'S FOOD AND DRINK SCENE LIKE? Traverse City is the Cherry Capital of the World. Michigan has 200+ wineries across five regions (Traverse City sits on the 45th parallel, same latitude as Bordeaux), 400+ craft breweries, and Grand Rapids is Beer City USA. Four major pizza brands were founded here: Domino's, Little Caesars, Hungry Howie's, and Jet's. ❓ IS MICHIGAN AFFORDABLE COMPARED TO OTHER STATES? Michigan's median household income is $72,000 versus the U.S. national median of $81,600 — about a 12% gap. BUT Michigan's cost of living index is 89.8, meaning living here is roughly 11% cheaper than the national average. Housing is 35–40% more affordable. ❓ WHAT IS A MICHIGAN LEFT? A Michigan Left is the state's signature traffic pattern: instead of turning left at major intersections, you drive past, U-turn at a designated turnaround, then come back and turn right.
