Long before the rise of the Inca Empire, the Andes were already connected by an extraordinary system of movement and exchange. Across deserts, high plateaus, valleys and mountains, llama caravans transported food, textiles, minerals and knowledge between communities separated by hundreds of kilometers. These journeys created one of the most remarkable trade and mobility networks of the ancient world. In this HistoriLab documentary, we explore how ancient Andean societies developed a system that allowed people to move goods and ideas across one of the most complex landscapes on Earth. Communities from different ecological regions — the Pacific coast, the Andean valleys, the Altiplano, and the Atacama Desert oases — exchanged resources through long caravan routes that crossed the Andes. Products such as maize, chili peppers, wool textiles, dried fish, salt, minerals and marine shells traveled across the mountains thanks to caravans of llamas and the deep environmental knowledge of Andean caravan traders. When the Inca Empire expanded across South America in the 15th century, it did not create this movement. It organized it. The Inca state integrated many of these ancient routes into a massive road system known as the Qhapaq Ñan, a network of roads stretching more than 30,000 kilometers across the Andes. But even within this imperial system, the caravans remained essential. For centuries, llama caravans continued to move goods across the mountains, sustaining the economy and connecting distant communities.
