The United States and Iran have announced a landmark agreement to end more than three months of conflict that disrupted global shipping, drove up oil prices and threatened a wider regional war. Under the deal, Washington will lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, while Tehran is expected to remove restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement, which is set to be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19, also reportedly includes discussions on Iran's nuclear programme, frozen assets and long-term regional security arrangements. Pakistan played a key role in mediating the breakthrough. The deal comes after weeks of tense negotiations and arrives on Donald Trump's 80th birthday, after he claimed 38 times that peace with Iran was close.
