Who is truly responsible for the Cultural Revolution? This is the final installment of Yu Ruxin's "Sixty Years of the Chinese Cultural Revolution" series, discussing Jiang Qing and the Cultural Revolution. In this episode, Yu Ruxin moves the discussion from Jiang Qing personally to the final power structure and historical accountability of the Cultural Revolution: What role did the People's Liberation Army (PLA) play in the Cultural Revolution? Could the Cultural Revolution have started and ended without the army? Why did Lin Biao flee in haste? Did the plane crash in Undur Khan completely shake the myth of Mao Zedong? Why did Jiang Qing and the "Gang of Four" fall so quickly after Mao's death? Yu Ruxin points out that the army was the most important and powerful balancing tool during the Cultural Revolution. Once the mass movement spiraled out of control, Mao Zedong ultimately had to rely on the army to suppress the chaos. The Lin Biao incident, however, showed many people for the first time that the leadership system, portrayed as a "god," was actually severely fractured internally. This episode also returns to the most crucial question in the entire series: Can the responsibility for the Cultural Revolution truly be placed solely on Jiang Qing, Lin Biao, and the "Gang of Four"? Yu Ruxin believes that while Jiang Qing certainly bears some responsibility, the entire blame cannot be placed on her alone.
