During a Brazilian Bodyboard Championship competition, an athlete was dragged towards the rocks and went through a great ordeal. Lifeguards tried to help and one of them rolled on the rocks on the way out. The day marked the arrival of a strong swell to the city of Rio. During the afternoon the waves were big, but breaking in a very choppy sea due to the strong onshore wind. A professional bodyboarder caught a wave towards the corner and got stuck in the current. Dudu Pedra, known for his courage in huge waves, was judging the stage. He grabbed a board and a pair of flippers and went into the water, along with João Zik, a competitor who had just finished competing. Outside, from atop the rocks, other people guided the bodyboarder in danger, trying to calm him down and prevent him from being thrown onto the rocks. Dudu and Zik managed to reach him and together they went to the outside. Two lifeguards entered the water to help, but one had a huge struggle trying to get out of the sea via the rocks. He got caught in the current, getting hit by waves on the head, and opted to exit via the rocks. The lifeguard rolled on the rock. Then he tried to climb back up and rolled again. Then the local bodyboarder, Renan Souza, known as Birulleyby @birulleybyrenan360, grabbed his board and fins, entered the water and assisted the lifeguard. A helicopter from the Fire Department arrived and completed the entire rescue. Despite the scare, nothing serious happened.
