He freed the Israelites from the rule of a Mesopotamian king. The second judge was Ehud, from the tribe of Benjamin, who delivered Israel from the Moabites. The next judge was a man named Shamgar, who delivered Israel from the Philistines using an ox goad. He likely lived in a town in the region of the tribe of Benjamin. Next, the Bible records the story of Deborah, the only female judge of Israel. Deborah exercised her leadership sitting under palm trees between Ramah and Bethel, in the mountains of Ephraim. Alongside Barak, Deborah participated in the liberation of the Israelite tribes from Canaanite rule. The next judge on this list is Gideon, who belonged to the tribe of Manasseh and delivered the children of Israel from the Midianites. After Gideon, his son Abimelech usurped power and ruled for a time from Shechem. After this, the Bible lists as a judge of Israel a man named Tolah, from the tribe of Issachar. After Tolah, the Bible says that the Israelite tribes were led by Judge Jair of Gilead. Subsequently, the next judge of Israel was Jephthah, also a Gileadite, who delivered the Israelites from the power of the Ammonites. Jephthah's leadership was followed by Ibzan, a judge who likely originated from a city in the territory of the tribe of Zebulun. After Ibzan, the Bible records that the children of Israel were judged by Elon, who belonged to the tribe of Zebulun, and after him by Abdon, a native of the mountains of Ephraim, southwest of Shechem. Finally, the last leader listed in the book of Judges was Samson, of the tribe of Dan, who became known for his heroic exploits against the Philistines. But the list of Israel's judges doesn't end with Samson. In fact, after him, the Israelite tribes were also judged by the high priest Eli and the prophet Samuel, until Saul was anointed king of Israel, beginning the period of the Israelite monarchy.
