Aerosmith: 'Our Careers Have Been Full of Ups and Downs' | Interview | TMF
In 1997, Isabelle Brinkman had the opportunity to interview Steve Tyler and Joe Perry from the iconic American rock band Aerosmith. The interview took place at the prestigious Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam. Aerosmith, formed in Boston in 1970, consists of Steven Tyler as the lead vocalist, harmonica player, and pianist, Joe Perry on guitar, Tom Hamilton on bass, Joey Kramer on drums, and Brad Whitford on guitar. Their music style is deeply rooted in blues-based hard rock, with influences from pop rock, heavy metal, glam metal, and rhythm and blues. Their unique sound has inspired countless rock artists, earning them titles such as "the Bad Boys from Boston" and "America's Greatest Rock and Roll Band." Aerosmith's journey began when Perry and Hamilton, who were previously in a band called the Jam Band, joined forces with Tyler, Kramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano. Tabano was later replaced by Brad Whitford in 1971. The band achieved significant success with a string of multi-platinum albums, starting with their self-titled debut in 1973, followed by Get Your Wings in 1974. It was their albums Toys in the Attic (1975) and Rocks (1976) that catapulted them into the mainstream. Hits like "Sweet Emotion," "Dream On," and "Walk This Way" showcased their chart-topping prowess. Aerosmith toured extensively during the 1970s, amassing a devoted fanbase known as the "Blue Army." However, drug addiction and internal conflicts led to the departures of Perry and Whitford in 1979 and 1981, respectively. The band faced challenging times, and their album Rock in a Hard Place (1982) failed to replicate their earlier successes. Despite these setbacks, Aerosmith persevered and eventually reunited with Perry and Whitford. They went on to reclaim their status as one of the most popular hard rock bands in the world.
