Around the year 1820, the settlement of the place began, with an economy based on agricultural and pastoral activity, which was initially known as "Malhada do Juazeiro". Rita of Cascia was still a nun, but she was already venerated in Europe, and when a Portuguese family came to Brazil, they brought a marvelous Baroque image with them. When the chapel was built, the image was donated. For a short time, the village was called "Santa Rita da Cachoeira". The history of Santa Rita was full of extraordinary events. Having died on May 22, 1457, she was beatified in 1627 in Rome by Pope Urban VIII, and canonized on May 24, 1900, by Pope Leo XIII. The construction of the church further stimulated the growth of the village, and it soon became a district, with the name "Santa Cruz da Ribeira do Trairi". On March 27, 1835, the small chapel became the Mother Church. In the region, there was a large presence of inharé trees, considered "sacred" by the local population and which, according to tradition, attracted great evils such as droughts and disease epidemics if any of its branches were broken. According to the story often told in the oral tradition of the city and recounted in the book Historical Memory of Santa Cruz. One day, a Franciscan missionary, aware of this tradition, decided to visit the village and ordered a cross to be erected in front of the Santa Rita Parish Church, made from branches of this tree. Because of this, the evils are said to have ceased, large springs of water gushed forth, and many of the region's typical animals became tame. It remained there for almost a century; the exact date of its placement is unknown, but this was the main reason the settlement became known as "the place of the Holy Cross." The legend of the Inharé Cross also reinforces this name for the municipality. The fate of the cross is unknown, but Monsignor Severino states in his book that "in 1919, Father José Mendes had the idea of transporting the aforementioned cross to a low hill, clearly visible from the city, located on the right bank of the Trairi River on Mount Carmel, today the Sanctuary of Santa Rita). When they went to remove the cross, because it had been buried there for almost a century, the base of the cross was damaged by time and did not withstand the move, falling to pieces." Even after political emancipation, when the Provincial Government gave the municipality the name Vila do Trairi, the population always referred to it as Santa Cruz, and even historical sources considered it so. Malhada do Trairi, Ribeira do Trairi or Santa Rita de Cachoeira were historical titles established by official documents, but in the end popular custom prevailed, which, whether by legend or not, considered that the "place of the Holy Cross" should be called by the symbol that was erected there and known for many centuries. After so many titles, only Santa Cruz. In 1954, the centuries-old chapel was demolished to make way for the current main church. The main project, including the naves, towers, doors, and main altar, was completed in 1965, and the four-faced clock tower in 1982. In 2006, the renovation of the presbytery of the main church was completed. Also in 2006, the community welcomed the project to build the Sanctuary of Saint Rita of Cascia. The construction period was from 2008 to 2010, with the inauguration on June 26, 2010. The image has a halo of 8 meters, with the body of the Saint in concrete measuring 42 meters, on a pedestal of 6 meters, totaling 56 meters. The statue is larger than Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, which measures 38 m, and also larger than Christ of the Concordia in Bolivia, which measures 40.44 m. It is the largest Catholic statue in the world, whose structure is supported by an 8 cm thick concrete wall along its entire length. The city attracted a large number of devotees of Saint Rita, but with the construction of this image, the Parish-Sanctuary became a reference point for religious tourism, receiving pilgrims from all parts of the country, as well as visitors from various countries. The patron saint's festivities take place from May 13th to 22nd, ending with a procession that has already reached the mark of 100,000 people. Saint Rita is affectionately called by devotees "saint of impossible causes" or "godmother of the backlands". Saint Rita of Cascia, pray for us.
