⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ BART: Final Journey on the Legacy Fleet from MacArthur to Fremont
On April 20, 2024, BART ran its last legacy fleet trains. The cars, originally built by Rohr Industries, first went into service on September 11, 1972, the opening day for the BART system. Since the 1970s, the legacy fleet has travelled tens of millions of miles and carrried hundreds of millions of passengers. They were the oldest still-operating rapid transit fleet in the nation before their retirement. To celebrate the legacy fleet, BART scheduled three final runs on Saturday, April 20, 2024. The first train was a VIP set that ran nonstop from MacArthur to Bay Fair, while the other two stopped at all stops from MacArthur to Fremont. The MacArthur-Fremont section was the original segment of track opened by BART in 1972, which made the route the obvious choice for such a train retirement ceremony. This video showcases the full journey made by the second train from MacArthur to Fremont. The journey certainly was an historic affair, and we're so grateful to have been able to document it. The Fleet of the Future survives the legacy fleet as its replacement, with 775 cars now traversing the BART system for decades to come. The final run was an emotional affair, attended by thousands looking to ride the iconic space-age trains one last time.
