AV-2426 [Cadena nacional: Alfonsín afirma "la casa está en orden..."]

After negotiating the surrender of the military officers who had rebelled against the trials for state terrorism during the last civic-military dictatorship, President Raúl Alfonsín arrived by helicopter at the Casa Rosada from Campo de Mayo. In the Plaza de Mayo, a massive and expectant crowd, demonstrating their support for democratic institutions, followed the unfolding events with great enthusiasm. A few minutes after his arrival, Alfonsín, accompanied by a delegation of high-ranking officials, appeared on the balcony of the presidential palace and greeted the assembled crowd. His presence was met with approval from the majority, who shouted, "Dear Raúl, the people are with you!", and criticism from a minority who declared, "This is what happens with the Full Stop Law." The president then wished everyone a "Happy Easter" and announced that the mutineers "have laid down their arms" and "will be arrested and brought to justice." At the same time, he characterized them as "a group of men, some of them heroes of the Falklands War," who, despite the tensions, reiterated their intention not to "stage a coup." In response to this statement, some of those gathered booed. Then, the president explained that, to "avoid bloodshed," he had instructed the Army commanders not to implement any repressive actions against the rebels; and that, because of this, everyone could "thank God" and affirm: "the house is in order and there is no bloodshed in Argentina." Finally, Alfonsín asked "the people who had entered Campo de Mayo to leave" the grounds, and invited all the citizens present to return to their homes, "kiss their children," and "celebrate Easter in peace."
