Gulfstream G550 Private jet in Cuzco, Peru. Tricky approach and landing.
Gulfstream G550 Private jet landing in the Andes Mountains at 10,800ft (3,300m) in Cuzco city, close to the Unesco World Heritage Inca ruins of Machu Pichu. The exhilarating visual approach starts at 14,500 ft overhead the city to the west. The descent is to the south of the city over the mountains to 13,000 ft then final descent is on base leg through a valley to join final runway 28 (only landing runway) with an elevation of 10,800ft. Due to the altitude the aircrafts groundspeed on landing is 152 Kts (176 mph / 283 kmh) which is higher than normal. I feel very privileged to have experienced flying into one of the worlds highest elevation airports, the tricky but beautiful approach was interesting to fly and I am sure would be simpler a second time around. Interestingly, human factors must be observed as during the early descent the cabin altitude rises to the high airfield elevation so good workload management and CRM is important with a cabin above 10,000ft for 20+ minutes, after landing it takes 1-2 days to acclimatise as some people can get mild altitude sickness but this varies per person. A wonderful city with great people which is well worth a visit. I hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching!
