In the middle of Chile’s Atacama Desert, a city that was once one of the wealthiest in the world thanks to its “white gold” has now become a ghost town with a population of zero. Humberstone — what on earth happened here? This desert city, once crowded with thousands of people, slowly collapsed because of a single “invention.” Refineries, rusted winding towers, empty churches and schools, and even the traces left behind by the people who once lived here.
