Every hunter knows the situation while stalking: Suddenly, game appears – and it quickly becomes clear that the freehand shooting technique practiced in hunting school is often not the optimal solution in practice. A stable rest is needed. But how much of a difference does a shooting stick really make? Together with Andy Spyra (Precision Hunter School), we tested exactly that. From the classic hazel stick to simple rests and modern high-end tripods, we compared various systems under realistic hunting conditions and at typical stalking distances. The goal: Not to theorize, but to visualize what actually happens. To achieve this, we mounted a camera directly behind the scope. You see exactly what the shooter sees: How much does the reticle move? How steady is the image? And how big is the difference between "sort of" and consistently stable?
