Californium - Tales from the Periodic Table
Californium is the third of five elements named for the lab where they were discovered in Berkeley, California (the others were Americium, Berkelium, Lawrencium, and Seaborgium.) Californium is the 98th element in the periodic table. It doesn't occur in nature, so must be made in the lab with accelerators, or, in nuclear reactors. Californium can be used as an intense and compact neutron source finding uses in neutron radiography, and oil well logging. It's also used in the creation of even higher elements in the periodic table.
