Brocock Sniper XR | SAFARI EDITION Full Review

Brocock was founded back in 1989 in Birmingham, England and has since been acquired by Italian gun makers Marocchi and Breda. For those who didn’t know, Daystate Ltd. is also within Marocchi and Breda’s airgun lineup. What does this mean from the consumer? Well it means that many of the high end developments made by Daystate over the years, can also be found within the Brocock line. To put it simply; that is good, very good. In front of me today is the Brocock Sniper XR .22 caliber Magnum Safari Edition. The Safari Edition is special in that it comes with a beautiful wood stock that has been weathered by hand at the factory. This special process does increase the price a bit, but you can’t argue with the beauty the process brings. Remember that aged bourbon I mentioned at the start of all this? If the weathered look isn’t for you or you want to save a bit of coin, then you will want to grab a synthetic or laminate version of this air rifle. The “magnum” version comes in either .22 or .25 caliber and will deliver up to 55 ft-lbs of energy. Both calibers come with a 10 shot magazine, picatinny scope rail, 480 cc air cylinder, 3 year warranty, weighs in at 7.3 lbs unscoped and measures 39” long without a moderator. Of course a moderator can be added with the 1/2x20 factory machined threads at the end of the barrel. I happen to have a 0 dB moderator attached to the one I’m using for the review. One of the highlights of the Brocock line for me is it’s consistency. Whether it was a .177 caliber Sniper, a .22 caliber compact, the new Atomic XR pistol/carbine or this Sniper XR Magnum that I have right now; they have all had remarkably consistent shot to shot feet per second measurements. This has all been without the need of a second regulator and can be attributed to the Harper Slingshot Valve being used in tandem with an adjustable Huma Regulator. The .22 caliber Sniper XR Magnum rang in with a standard fps measurement of 960 FPS over 30 shots. This all happened with a standard deviation of 6.0 fps. Of course the Brocock line of airguns is known for its accuracy and this one didn’t disappoint either. As a tester, you can generally tell within the first few minutes if your time at the range will go smoothly. As I was getting used to the rifle and plinking at some spinners out on the range, the consistency was spot on. Moving to paper for the standard, 50 yard 5 shot group accuracy test, I printed a very nice .51 inches CTC group. Of course groupings change based on conditions, pellets, etc…, but I am very satisfied with my initial findings and expect you will be too. For those of you who like to tinker and adjust settings, the Brocock line allows you to do so. The Huma regulator is adjustable with a slotted screwdriver from the underside of the stock, the hammer spring is adjustable with an allen key at the rear of the action and of course the transfer port is adjustable with the handy stepped knob on the right hand side of the breech. With all of this adjustability, I would highly suggest you start with the transfer port if you do anything at all. My experience tells me that these rifles shoot pretty darn well right out of the box after a good barrel cleaning. Let’s talk trigger pull for just a second. This has the standard Brocock trigger that any one who has owned a Brocock over the past few years has had the pleasure of experiencing. After completing 5 trials, it was averaging 12.9 oz. per pull What applications do I see the Brocock Sniper XR Magnum fulfilling? Well the number one answer is hunting applications, especially in an open field situation where you are stretching your shots out and the additional barrel length wouldn’t interfere. You are also likely to find that this rifle can be used for target sports as Claudio Flores showed in 2018 shooting an early version of the Brocock Sniper when he won Extreme Benchrest, plinking and enjoyment applications work as well. If you are looking for that strong well aged taste airgun that will last a lifetime, is easy to work on and will perform with the best of them you will want to check out the Brocock line of airguns.
