Semporna (仙本那), located on the southeastern coast of Sabah (沙巴) in Malaysian Borneo, is a town where land dissolves into turquoise waters, and the horizon is dotted with islands that seem too beautiful to be real. Once a quiet fishing village, Semporna is now one of the world's gateways to marine wonder — especially for divers, freedivers, and ocean nomads chasing reefs, turtles, and technicolor coral walls. The town itself is modest and chaotic — wooden stilt houses, seafood markets, and rows of motorbikes and minivans loaded with gear. It’s not Semporna’s streets that pull travelers in, but the sea beyond. Boats depart daily from the Semporna Jetty, heading toward islands that have become synonymous with world-class diving. Most famous is Sipadan Island (西巴丹岛), Malaysia’s only oceanic island formed by living coral on an extinct volcano. Jacques Cousteau once called it “an untouched piece of art,” and today, strict permits limit the number of daily visitors to protect its fragile reef system. Barracuda tornadoes, reef sharks, and swirling schools of jackfish dance around steep underwater walls. Closer to town, Mabul (马布岛) and Kapalai (卡帕莱岛) offer excellent macro diving — the small, strange, and beautiful: nudibranchs, frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish. Resorts here are built on stilts above translucent shallows, with sea turtles gliding beneath your overwater bungalow. But Semporna is more than a dive destination. It’s also home to the Bajau Laut (海上巴瑤人) — the famed sea gypsies who have lived for generations entirely at sea. Many still dwell in stilted wooden homes or boats, floating between islands, fishing and free-diving for their livelihoods.
