IPOMÉE PURPUREA ou VOLUBILIS - Quelle Plante Pour Mon Jardin ?
Here's a very interesting annual when you want to create diversity and movement in a garden in just one season. Imagine, we start with a seed sown in a relatively temperate environment (around 18°C/64°F) in early spring. The seed germinates in a few weeks, and then you plant it, once you're sure the risk of frost has passed, at the base of a support, and that's where the magic happens! In milder climates, of course, you can sow them in clusters (small holes) of 3 to 4 seeds directly in the ground. You quickly understand the origin of its common name, "voluble": the stems twine gracefully around a support very quickly. Starting at ground level, it can cover 2 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) in a single season. The foliage is medium green and consists of lobed leaves for young leaves and oval or even heart-shaped leaves, reaching about 20 cm (8 inches) in length for older leaves. Large, trumpet-shaped flowers, approximately 10 cm in diameter, appear on this foliage. They range in color from purplish-blue to pink, magenta, or white, with a lighter, almost white, tube. The flowers are grouped in cymes of 3 to 7, which do not all bloom at the same time. This provides a bouquet of flowers from early summer until the first frost, perfectly enlivening your support and beautifully decorating the space where it is planted. Place your climbing plant in a sunny spot with light, well-draining soil. Happy gardening!
