Today, we walk through Yongsan, the place in Seoul experiencing the most dramatic transformation. From the trendy hotspots of Samgakji, past the towering skyscrapers of Yongsan Station, to the old alleys of Baekbin Railroad Crossing where time seems to have stood still just beneath those very buildings, we embark on a special journey connecting Yongsan’s past and present. [Samgakji & Yongsan Station Avenue] We pass Samgakji, recently dubbed "Yongridan-gil" and bursting with hip energy, and head toward Yongsan Station. The ultra-modern mixed-use high-rises soaring along the avenue seem to symbolize South Korea’s dazzling development. The city lights reflecting off glass facades are magnificent, but we are looking for the "other" Yongsan hidden behind that glamour. [Baekbin Railroad Crossing & Old Alleys] After passing Yongsan Station and entering Baekbin Railroad Crossing, also known as "Dang-Dang Street," the scenery instantly time-slips back decades. With the 'Dang-Dang' sound of the crossing barrier, a train passes by, and next to the tracks, old tiled-roof houses and aged restaurants stand shoulder to shoulder. Sheltering themselves beneath the massive skyscrapers that loom like a folding screen, these old alleys preserve the rugged yet warm beauty of things that are fading away.
