Chilam Joshi is one of the most misunderstood festivals in Pakistan. Most people know it as a spring celebration. A time of color, dance and music in the valleys of Chitral. And while that is true it is only the surface of something far deeper. For the Kalash people, Chilam Joshi is a sacred religious festival. It is the time of year when the entire community comes together to pray, to give thanks to their God for everything they have been given, their land, their harvests, their animals, their families and to ask for blessings in the season ahead. It is an act of faith. An act of gratitude. And an act of love. In this documentary we went deep into the Kalash valleys of Bumburet in Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to witness Chilam Joshi not as outsiders looking in but as guests welcomed by one of the most warm, generous and spiritually rich communities in the world. What you will see in this documentary is not a performance for cameras. It is a people living their faith singing their prayers, offering their gratitude, dancing not for entertainment but as an expression of their devotion to their God and their love for the nature that sustains them. The Kalash have one of the deepest connections to the natural world of any community on earth. Their God lives in the mountains, the rivers, the forests and the animals around them. This documentary covers the full Chilam Joshi festival including the Cherek Pipi ceremony on the first morning where goat milk is collected and distributed to the entire community as an act of sharing and gratitude the traditional Kalash dances, the prayers, the offerings and the gathering of the community in a way that has not changed in thousands of years. The Kalash are one of the oldest living cultures in the world. Their language, their religion, their traditions and their way of life are unique. They are also one of the most loving, welcoming and genuinely joyful communities you will ever encounter. This documentary is our attempt to share that with the world honestly, respectfully and with deep appreciation for the trust the Kalash community placed in us.
