The Relatable i5-4690K

Testing the Intel i5-4690K quad core CPU in 10 popular and demanding games in 2023, using an RTX 3070 discrete GPU. Overclockable quad core i5s were the go-to gaming CPU for the better part of a decade. Although many enthusiasts - particularly the more frugal ones - would swear by the i5-2500K and decry later models as being iterative refreshes rather than genuine upgrades, that might not be true. The Haswell i5-4690K was the first such chip to feature AVX 2, which, along with improved IPC, might at last be a deciding factor in the 1150 chip’s favour. However, in the 9 years since its release, core and thread count has taken on a more meaningful role in games. Is the classic quad core too much of a bottleneck for 2023?
