Michael Faraday Told Him to Patent It. He Refused. π¬π§π₯
In 1826, a Stockton chemist invented something the world had never seen. When he struck it against a stone, fire came from his hand. Instant fire. Carried in a tin in your pocket. His name was John Walker. He was the son of a grocer. He had wanted to be a surgeon but he couldn't stand the sight of blood. So he became a chemist instead. He invented the friction match. Every match struck since came from his idea. Michael Faraday β one of the greatest scientists in British history β saw what Walker had done and told him to patent it. To take the credit. To make the fortune. He refused. This is the story of the man who gave the world its instant flame, and walked away from the riches it could have made him. ββββββββββββββββββββ π¬π§ KEY DATES 29 May 1781 β John Walker born in Stockton-on-Tees 1819 β Opens his chemist's shop at 59 High Street 1826 β Invents the friction match 7 April 1827 β First sale recorded in his Day Book to a Mr Hixon 1829 β Samuel Jones takes the idea and sells it as "Lucifers" 1 May 1859 β John Walker dies aged 78 Buried at St Mary's, Norton ββββββββββββββββββββ π¬π§ BE PART OF US We are Proud Of Us β a community-funded British history channel recovering the stories of ordinary British people who changed the world.
