The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most revered miraculous icons in the Orthodox Church, considered the intercessor and protector of the people, family, and home. The icon was miraculously discovered in Kazan in 1579 after a major fire. The Mother of God appeared to a nine-year-old girl, Matrona, in a dream and showed her the place where her icon was hidden. At the designated location, amid the ashes, an icon undamaged by the fire was indeed found. Iconography The icon belongs to the Hodegetria (Guide) iconographic type, but has its own unique features. It depicts the Mother of God, half-length, with the Christ Child standing to the left. The Child is depicted frontally, with His right hand in blessing, while the Mother of God's left hand is hidden.
