Preparing fleece for spinning: 2 picking and carding
Just showing how I have been picking through and carding the two fleeces from the fleece washing video. I didn't use to pick wool prior to carding, but have now found that this extra step makes it much easier to achieve a more consistent rolag and consequently a more consistent yarn. Faced with sacks of fleece to get through, I made a swinging wool picker recently to speed things up, but I have to say, I wasn't that impressed with the resulting wool. Maybe I wasn't doing it properly but I found that although the picker made the fleece very airy, I found it didn't break up the small lumpy bits (neps?) very well, so I've gone back to picking by hand. Yes, picking is a little tedious, but I think it's worth the effort for a more enjoyable spinning experience later on.
