When deep-sea hydrothermal vents were discovered in 1977, the scientific community was reportedly engulfed in shock. Biologist Professor Lee Dae-han states, “The source of energy for the Earth’s ecosystem that we knew was the sun,” adding, “The possibility that the chemosynthetic system emerged before the sun-based photosynthetic system was a tremendous shock to biologists.” In particular, when it was revealed that the site where hydrothermal vents were first discovered was near the Galapagos Islands, known as the birthplace of Darwin's theory of evolution, the cast members were reportedly left speechless for a while.
