Johannes Möckel plays Deadman by Karnivool (drum cover +transcription)

Hello friend! First of all let me express my gratitude for you spending two of your most precious resources here with me and on my work; your time and your attention. I am delighted you (or some algorithm for you) found your way here and I sincerely hope you enjoy what you hear and see. It's fair to say I feel proud to present my take on Karnivool's masterpiece of a Prog-Rock Song Deadman, from their beloved album Sound Awake. I tried my best to do this track justice and to spot and learn all those details and nuances. The way to do it, was by transcribing the entire drum part. Which was fun, very interesting and enlightening. I keep appreciating what a great songwriter Steve Judd is. He is becoming more and more one of my main inspirations and references when it comes to writing my own prog drum parts... "What would Steve play?" :D And of course the whole Vool experience grew on me heavily. Their next Album has to be my most anticipated one right now. Since they tend to get better with each release. I am very happy to share the 7 pages of transcription with you! Pick it up here: https://tinyurl.com/DeadmanDrumTransc... It's still a work in progress, but the notes are all there and about 99,7% right. Just the Layout could use some face-lifting. Then again, Cubase 10.5 is what I use and it's rather limited when it comes to that. For learning the song it should serve you very well, though! Have fun with it! What proofed to be quite an obstical in getting this piece and drum cover down was the fact that I only had 5 days on my actual kit to authentically practise all the parts before shooting. The rest happend earlier at home on 2 practise pads and a chair. ;) Besides that, simply memorizing 266 bars down to the last ghost note kind of killed me. And there was only one afternoon to track and this was actually take 4 of 4. At first I wanted to take the first one, but in the end this one made it. I was close to burned out at the point of playing Deadman for the 4th time in a short manner of time, since in addition to a 10 minute track, I kept jaming to Vool's Goliath in between and went all out on that one as well. I have to yet check the material that we captured. If am happy with a take, i'll upload it, too! Such a fun tune to get crazy on! Also the entire mixing & mastering was done by me. Which in the end, took me a long time, since there is so much happening. Again such attention to detail, these guys have. Getting all that right as an amateur mixer with limited time on my hands being a young parent was at some point close to frustrating - coming back after listening to the latest mixdown and beeing like: "how could I completely overlook this part/track/detail" - but I learned a lot and overall was almost addicted to the process of mixing and refining, spending about all the free time I had on it. :) My faithful DT770s accompanied my ears throught out the largest part. So yeah, this had to become a headphone-mix, since I was working at home and mostly in the night time and couldn't make use of my Adams much. I hope it translates well to your system nevertheless. Let me know! I'd be very interested about your feedback. And yes, it's a very hot master, but I aimed to get as close as possible to the vibe and esthetics of the original. Which includes plenty of saturation and distortion. 2009 after all beeing close to the peak of loudness war.. A big hug for my beloved brother for holding that camera! And thank you Marius, for letting me use your 8" tom. Again, thank you for your time. I wish you all mental, physical and spiritual health, wealth and happiness!
