This seems especially contrasting when you remember that it is here that one of the oldest continuous cultures in the world exists - the legacy of the Aborigines, who have lived on this continent for over 50,000 years and whose tradition is now rapidly disappearing under the pressure of modernity. Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese navigator who became the first European to round the Cape of Good Hope and reach India by sea in 1498. Da Gama founded a Portuguese colony in India and created a strategic military presence there, establishing Portugal's monopoly on trade. Afonso de Albuquerque was one of the greatest Portuguese military and navigators, considered the architect of the Portuguese colonial empire in the Indian Ocean. He captured the strategically important city of Malacca in 1511, giving Portugal control of the Strait of Malacca, an important trade route between China and India. Albuquerque also established Portuguese forts on the Hormuz Peninsula and on the Persian coast, controlling access to the Persian Gulf. Pedro de Quiros was a Spanish navigator known for his tireless dream of discovering Terra Australis, the legendary Southern Land. Luis Vaes de Torres, a Spanish navigator known for his voyage through the strait between New Guinea and Australia, which later received his name - Torres Strait. Willem Janszoon, a Dutch navigator, was one of the first Europeans to explore the coast of New Guinea. Abel Tasman is a legendary Dutch navigator best known for his discovery of Tasmania and New Zealand. However, his achievements extend far beyond that. Tasman also discovered the islands of Fiji and Tonga, which were key to later European voyages in the Pacific. James Cook, a British navigator, was not only famous for his discoveries in Australia. One of his most important achievements was the discovery and mapping of much of the coast of New Zealand. But colonization brought great suffering to the Australian Aborigines. When the British began to colonize Australia in the late 18th century, their actions led to a large-scale genocide of the indigenous population. The destruction of the Australian Aborigines is comparable to the most brutal genocides in history. From mass murder to systematic oppression, the number of indigenous peoples plummeted from one million to fewer than 100,000 by the beginning of the 20th century.
