Series Resonance in RLC Circuit
In this video, Resonance in the Series RLC circuit has been explained. So, in this video, what is resonance in series RLC circuit, and what are the different parameters (Q factor, Bandwidth) related to Series RLC circuit has been discussed and in the later part of the video, expression for the resonant frequency, Q factor and Bandwidth of the Series RLC circuit have been derived. What is Resonance in RLC circuit? Resonance is the phenomenon in the electrical circuit, where the output of the circuit is maximum at one particular frequency. And that frequency is known as the resonant frequency. At the resonant frequency, The capacitive reactance and inductive reactance are equal. ( XL = XC), and the impedance of the circuit will be purely resistive. Not only that, but the value of impedance will be minimum at the resonant frequency. And hence the value of current will be maximum. So, this series RLC circuit provides the tunability at one particular frequency and this principle is used in radio communication for channel selection. Now, to define the selectivity of the resonant circuit, two parameters are widely used. 1) Q factor 2) Bandwidth Q-factor: Q-factor defines the sharpness of this resonant curve, or it defines the selectivity of the circuit. It is the ratio of energy stored in the reactive element in the circuit to the energy dissipated across the resistor in the circuit. So, larger the value of this Q in the circuit, the better the selectivity provided by the circuit. Q= 1/R √(L/C) = wL/R= 1/(wCR) Bandwidth: The bandwidth of the circuit is defined as the difference between the -3dB frequencies or half power frequency. The smaller, the bandwidth of the circuit, the better will be the selectivity provided by the circuit. B.W= R/L = w/Q The timestamps for the different topics which are discussed in the video is given below: 0:45 What is Resonance in the RLC circuit? 7:15 Quality factor 7: 57 Bandwidth of the series resonant circuit 9:19 Derivation for the expression of resonant frequency 11:36 Derivation of bandwidth of the series resonant circuit 16:57 Expression of the Quality factor in terms of the circuit parameter. This video will be helpful to all students of science and engineering in understanding the concept of resonance in the series RLC circuit.
