François Bayrou : la gifle de Strasbourg - Archive INA

April 9, 2002 François Bayrou, the UDF candidate for the presidential election, was visiting Strasbourg to address the issue of insecurity. While visiting the La Meinau district, he was confronted by about forty young people after a window of the local town hall office, where he was with the mayor (UDF) Fabienne Keller, was broken by a thrown stone. During this exchange, a child picked his pocket: François Bayrou slapped him. He then uttered the phrase, "You're not picking my pocket." The report alternates between commentary and footage of François Bayrou talking with Fabienne Keller, an interview with the candidate, and an excerpt from his speech: "In 18 months, these neighborhoods must once again see the presence of security forces, representatives of public authority, those who represent the State and solidarity. This is the commitment I make to you in Strasbourg."
