Maria Athanasopoulou, known as the Galaxidiotissa, was one of the women of 1821 who actively participated in the Greek War of Independence. (Subtitles available in Greek, English & German.) Her story barely survived the passage of time, preserved through only a handful of references, and it mirrors the stories of many women who fought but were never included in history books. In this video, we attempt to restore the memory of a woman who fought both at sea and on land, in a war that did not equally record all forms of participation. The Greek Revolution of 1821 was not written only by well-known names.
