1917, THE GREAT FIRE OF SALONICA

This is a 6 min. excerpt of "1917, THE GREAT FIRE OF THESSALONIKI", 32'.00'', production of the Archaeological Institute of Macedonian and Thracian Studies, 2012. The film was an official selection at the Greek Documentary Film Festival of Chalkis, Oct. 8-13, 2013. It was originally the contribution of the Archaeological Institute to the "Environment and Culture 2012" event of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. The great fire of 1917, which destroyed the largest part of down town Thessaloniki, was a key incident in its history. More than 70.000 people were left homeless and monuments, public buildings, public services and commercial stores were ravaged. The new town that emerged from the ruins with a new plan had the ambition to meet the needs of a new era. A disaster and a new beginning at same time, the fire comes to life through rare footage from Hellenic and foreign audiovisual archives and the comments of prominent researchers.
