Oxidative phosphorylation: https://rethinkbiologynotes.com/oxida... Glycolysis is the process of breaking down glucose, a six-carbon sugar, into two molecules of pyruvate, a three-carbon compound. It is the first step of cellular respiration, which produces energy for the cells. Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm and does not require oxygen. It involves ten steps, each catalyzed by a specific enzyme. In this video, you will learn about the glycolysis pathway, its stages, products and significance. Glycolysis has two phases: an energy-requiring phase and an energy-releasing phase. In the energy-requiring phase, two molecules of ATP are used to activate glucose and split it into two molecules of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate. In the energy-releasing phase, each glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate molecule is oxidized and phosphorylated to form 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate, which then transfers a phosphate group to ADP to form ATP. This happens twice for each glucose molecule, resulting in four ATP molecules. The final product of glycolysis is pyruvate, which can enter the Krebs cycle in aerobic conditions or undergo fermentation in anaerobic conditions. Glycolysis is an ancient metabolic pathway that is found in almost all living organisms. It is essential for generating energy and providing building blocks for other biochemical reactions. By watching this video, you will gain a better understanding of how glycolysis works and why it is important for life.
