The following day, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, through Cardinal Prefect Víctor Manuel Fernández, decreed the excommunication latae sententiae of the bishops involved—both the consecrating bishops (Alfonso de Galarreta and Bernard Fellay) and the newly consecrated bishops (Pascal Schreiber, Michael Goldade, Michel Poinsinet de Sivry, and Marc Hanappier)—for having performed an act defined as "of a schismatic nature." The explanatory note from the Dicastery further clarifies that the priests of the Society of Saint Pius X administer the sacraments illicitly, and that the sacrament of penance and marriages they assist are invalid. As for the lay faithful who formally adhere to the Society, they also incur excommunication.
