'Expendable' British Destroyer That Held Narvik Fjord For Nine Hours Against Five German Destroyers
Battle of Narvik 1940: how 'expendable' British destroyers held Ofotfjord for nine hours and destroyed all ten German destroyers of Kriegsmarine Group I. Operation Weserübung's fatal flaw — five fuel-starved German destroyers and one battleship's broadside that changed the war at sea. On 13 April 1940, Admiral William Whitworth led HMS Warspite and nine destroyers up Ofotfjord, Norway, to finish the job begun three days earlier by Captain Bernard Warburton-Lee's 2nd Destroyer Flotilla. The German garrison — ten destroyers of the 1934A and 1936 classes under Kommodore Friedrich Bonte, landed to seize the iron-ore port of Narvik — had arrived almost out of fuel, held at the mercy of the improvised tanker Jan Wellem. In two engagements on 10 and 13 April, the Royal Navy sank or forced the scuttling of all ten Kriegsmarine destroyers: Georg Thiele, Wolfgang Zenker, Bernd von Arnim, Erich Giese, Erich Koellner, Diether von Roeder, Hans Lüdemann, Hermann Künne, Wilhelm Heidkamp, and Anton Schmitt.
