The latest remarks by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) coordinator Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy have once again brought the Amaravati capital issue into the political spotlight. Speaking to the media at the party's headquarters in Tadepalli on Friday, Sajjala defended YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy's recent statements and elaborated on the party's position regarding Amaravati, the Capital Region Development, and the Kadapa Steel Plant. Sajjala stated that the concept of "MAVIGAN" (as referred to by the party) was mentioned in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, although the YSRCP did not actively discuss it during its five years in power. He argued that the issue is now being raised to prevent further waste of public funds. Questioning the viability of Amaravati as the state's capital, Sajjala claimed that even long-established capital cities such as Naya Raipur and Chandigarh have not yet achieved complete development. Based on this comparison, he argued that Amaravati, which he described as an unsuitable location for a capital city, would never fully develop. He also referred to the recommendations of the Sivaramakrishnan Committee, stating that the committee had expressed reservations about selecting Amaravati as the capital region. According to Sajjala, the government should halt further construction activities in Amaravati, as continuing the project would only result in additional financial burden on the state's exchequer. He alleged that if Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy returns to power in 2029, his government would initiate legal action into what he described as corruption associated with the Amaravati project. Sajjala further claimed that YSRCP's current stand is intended to safeguard public money rather than allow continued expenditure on projects that, according to the party, are not financially or strategically viable. The YSRCP leader also addressed the long-pending Kadapa Steel Plant project. He stated that shortly after assuming office in 2019, the Jagan Mohan Reddy government had symbolically launched the project. He argued that if the YSRCP had returned to power in the 2024 elections, the party would have completed the construction of the steel plant and commenced production. Additionally, Sajjala accused the present government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, of obstructing the Kadapa Steel Plant project. He alleged that industrialist Jindal was drawn into the Jethwani case, which, according to him, created obstacles for the project's progress. The statements have once again intensified the political debate over Amaravati and major infrastructure projects in Andhra Pradesh. While the YSRCP maintains that its position is aimed at preventing financial losses and ensuring accountability, the ruling alliance continues to support Amaravati's development as the state's capital.
