Director Miike's latest work, "The Monstrous Lumberjack," depicts a "psychopath vs. serial killer" battle. The protagonist, lawyer Akira Ninomiya, played by Kazuya Kamenashi, is a "crazy" psychopath who is willing to even kill to achieve his goals. The story unfolds at a rapid pace when the protagonist becomes the target of a sadistic serial killer who removes brains with an axe. Nakano's name is listed in the film's credits as "psychopath supervisor." But what kind of person is actually a "psychopath," and what does it even mean to "supervise a psychopath"? During a conversation with the director that borders on giving away spoilers, Nakano makes the shocking statement, "In fact, there is data that shows that one in 100 people is a psychopath." According to Nakano, who published "Psychopath" (Bunshun Shinsho) in 2016, there are significant differences between people who are considered psychopaths and those who are not, in the functioning of the parts of the brain that sense empathy for others and the ability to recognize "pain." In short, they are "people who think of morality and ethics as memorization subjects." While psychopaths are feared, they also express an ambivalent view, saying, "As long as they're far away and don't cause any direct harm, we instinctively support them." Also, director Miike, who continues to make violent films, offers a valuable self-analysis on why his works are becoming increasingly extreme.
