In jurisprudence, the word “person” does not only mean a human being in the ordinary sense. In law, a person is any subject to whom rights and duties are attached. This includes two kinds of persons: natural persons and legal persons. A natural person means a human being, capable of rights and obligations. A legal person means an artificial creation of law, like a company, corporation, or state, which the law recognizes as having legal personality. The idea of “person” is important because without legal personality, no one can have rights or duties. Thus, jurisprudence studies “person” not in a physical sense, but in a legal sense, as a bearer of rights and obligations.
