Blooming Stones (Slovakia) - On Purulent Meadows (EP 2022)

The debut EP from the main project of Slovak multidisciplinary artist Juraj Bolf (Bitter Course, Pellucid Crops, Domkirke av Plager, Foul Light), also known for his excellent graphic work under the same moniker. Brilliant release utilizing a minimal setup to utmost effectiveness, mostly just consisting of lone guitar and bass yet whose sound has been sculpted like a monument into an overwhelming thunderous presence through some veritable pedalboard wizardry, embarking on nomadic, droning psychedelic folk wanderings, often following a vaguely post-punk melodic paradigm and being filtered through the textural lens of atmospheric black metal. Awe-inducing hymns spelled out via cyclical motifs and mantra-like repetition, almost akin to the transcendental flow of classical ragas, and overall quite reminiscent of the tempestuous might of the BlazeBirth Hall or of Turia’s cascading riffing style. At times also very much in line with Dunleckh or Mask of Canaan’s chthonic folk, as well as presenting strong sonic parallels to Sex Act’s excellent “Darker Days Have Come” tape, but stripped down to its bare essence, absent any percussive or vocal elements aside from the samples on the 1st track. A maelstrom of solemn sweeping chords that channel the ancient currents and winds, embodying the primordial grandeur of the elements with telluric vigor, as if naturally exuded by the earth itself throughout vast barren alien landscapes which seem to have a life of their own, misshapenly stretching far beyond what anyone could traverse. Remote sounds no ears were meant to hear, extemporaneously summoned and falling with the cold indifference of a calamity. Dedicated to Andrzej Żuławski's legendary 1988 film "On the Silver Globe".
