The place was gradually consumed by the darkness of the Abyss, which even the greatest mages were unable to tame. The source of this calamity was a primordial man named Manus, buried deep beneath the city's walls. It is said that his life ended prematurely, leaving his soul harboring a tremendous rage. And excavations near his grave have only shattered this troubled slumber. Manus became the embodiment of darkness, a terrifying monster, a perversion destined to foretell humanity's true destiny. History will remember him as the Father of the Abyss. According to later legends, the Knight Artorias and his faithful she-wolf Sif were to put an end to the beast, but as we now well know, this was untrue. Lord Gwyn's champion, like many before him, succumbed to the power of the abyss, and his work was completed by an unknown Undead, fulfilling the legend of the knight who walked the abyss. Manus was indeed defeated, but he left behind an equally dark legacy. Small fragments of his soul were scattered throughout the world, giving rise to new sinister beings. From the fragments of Manus's soul, three women were born—each embodying one of the traits of their powerful father. These women were known as Nadalia, Elana, and perhaps the most powerful of them all: Nashandra. We already know the latter well as King Vendrick's wife.
