Constructed between 1900 and 1910, it was the country residence of Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena, a prominent landowner and philanthropist. The mansion is situated on a 42-acre estate overlooking the Kalu Ganga (Black River), approximately 2 km from Kalutara town. Architectural Significance Richmond Castle showcases a blend of architectural styles, including local central courtyard traditions, Indian royal architecture, Roman-Dutch influences, and elements of Greek design. The mansion features 99 doors, 34 windows, and 16 rooms. Materials for its construction were sourced internationally: Italian floor tiles, Burmese teak for the main staircase, Scottish stained glass windows, and English ironwork. Historical Background Inspired by a palace in India owned by his schoolmate, Raja Rajeswara Sethupathi, Siriwardena sought to replicate its grandeur. After being denied access to the original plans, he visited the palace with local architects who sketched its design. Upon returning to Ceylon, he constructed Richmond Castle, moving in with his wife, Clarice Matilda Maude Suriyabandara, in 1910. The couple, unable to have children, lived there for 32 years.
