The Baitul Mukarram Mosque complex in Dhaka, Bangladesh includes shops, offices, libraries, and parking areas. The market area is located outside the mosque and sells religious books and artifacts. In 1959, Abdul Latif Ibrahim Bawani proposed to Major General Umrao Khan, the military administrator of East Pakistan, that a grand mosque be built in Dhaka. The mosque was built on 8.30 acres of land between Old Dhaka and New Dhaka, where a large pond called Paltan pond once was.
