Five Questions | Can Atheists Answer These Questions About Morality?

Five Questions is a series that explores some of the biggest questions in science, philosophy, politics and religion. Rather than relying on slogans or personal attacks, each episode examines five carefully selected questions designed to encourage thoughtful, evidence-based discussion. In this episode, we turn to one of philosophy’s oldest and most important questions: What is the foundation of morality? Most people, regardless of their religious beliefs, agree that some actions—such as murder, rape, torture and genocide—are genuinely wrong. But why are they wrong? Are moral values objective features of reality, or are they ultimately products of evolution, biology, culture or human agreement? Before asking our questions, we first explore the philosophical and scientific background. We examine what evolutionary biology says about moral instincts, what neuroscience tells us about empathy, and how philosophers distinguish between describing human behaviour and explaining why we ought to behave in certain ways. In this episode, we ask five questions: If God does not exist, what makes an action objectively right or wrong? If evolution shaped our moral instincts for survival, why should we assume they correspond to objective moral truth? If morality is based on human wellbeing, who decides what wellbeing actually means? When atheists condemn historical atrocities committed under explicitly atheistic governments, what objective moral standard are they appealing to? If the universe is ultimately indifferent, why should anyone sacrifice themselves for a complete stranger? The purpose of this discussion is not to suggest that atheists cannot be moral people. Many atheists live deeply ethical lives and make valuable contributions to society. The question is different: What is the philosophical foundation that makes morality objectively binding rather than merely a matter of preference, biology or social consensus?
