Neuromorphic Integration into the Kokkos Ecosystem - Bradley Theilman, Sandia National Laboratories

Neuromorphic Integration into the Kokkos Ecosystem - Bradley Theilman, Sandia National Laboratories Neuromorphic hardware is beginning to reach scales relevant for High-Performance Computing (HPC)1, and new neuromorphic algorithms now show promise for numerical computation2. Despite this promise, the neuromorphic software stack is currently inadequate3, with bespoke tools and libraries making it difficult to integrate neuromorphic hardware into the existing HPC ecosystem. Kokkos’ focus on performance portability presents an attractive target for integrating neuromorphic technologies into large HPC systems and expanding the potential user base for neuromorphic accelerators. This talk will present initial work on integrating a neuromorphic backend into the Kokkos ecosystem. We will describe our efforts to add neuromorphic execution and memory spaces to Kokkos, allowing for Kokkos Views to transfer data to and from the Spinnaker 2 neuromorphic architecture. We will touch on the unique aspects of neuromorphic systems and we hope to convince the broader Kokkos community that neuromorphic is a viable target for Kokkos, spurring continued development. 1.
