Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, famous for defending Cartagena de Indias in 1741 from the invasion of Vernon's English fleet, one of the five largest navies in history. He is considered a hero in Spain, but also in Colombia, and especially in Cartagena de Indias, where he is known as "half-man." His long career brought him great victories, capturing many English, Dutch, and French ships, especially pirates and privateers. His distinctive image, due to his war wounds—lame, one-armed, and one-eyed—made his name popular as "half-man." Blas de Lezo's life blends myth with reality. His grand defensive strategy for Cartagena de Indias during the British siege of 1741, alongside Viceroy Sebastián de Eslava, made him go down in history.
