When lunging, horses are moved in a circle around the rider on a lunge line. The rider stands either in the arena or in a designated lungeing circle. The lungeing circle provides an appropriate circle size and gives the horse security through its consistent boundaries. The lunge line and lunge whip are the basic equipment for lunging and serve as a means of communication. The length of the lunge line should be adjusted depending on the horse's responsiveness. A smaller circle is particularly suitable for collection exercises. The lunge whip should always be carried to encourage the hindquarters and motivate the horse to push off energetically. Training aids such as side reins or draw reins can be used during lunging.
