Martin Jarvis plays Bertie Wooster, Jeeves and an array of other PG Wodehouse characters in front of an enthusiastic, invited audiences. In "The Aunt and the Sluggard" from BBC Radio's "Jeeves Live!" series, Bertie Wooster finds himself in New York trying to help his poet friend, Rocky Todd. Rocky is a recluse who detests city life, preferring his quiet existence on Long Island. However, his wealthy aunt has made his financial allowance conditional on him living in New York and writing her lively letters about his exciting experiences in Manhattan. Rocky is in a bind, as he's unwilling to engage with the city's "flesh-pots" but desperately needs the money. Bertie, naturally, turns to his brilliant manservant, Jeeves, to concoct a plan. Jeeves devises a scheme: he will go out and experience the vibrant New York nightlife, meticulously taking notes on the goings-on. Rocky will then use these notes to write his letters to his aunt, giving her the impression that he's living a wild and exciting life in the city, while he continues to enjoy his solitude. The plan works splendidly for a while, with the aunt being delighted by Rocky's seemingly thrilling escapades. However, complications arise when the aunt, invigorated by her nephew's vivid descriptions, suddenly decides she's well enough to visit New York herself and immerse herself in the very city she believes Rocky is enjoying so much. This forces Bertie and Jeeves to scramble to maintain the deception and prevent Rocky's true reclusive nature from being exposed.
