Hills Like White Elephants (Hindi/हिंदी में)
Ernest Hemingway was a writer known for his simple and direct style. He used short sentences, few adjectives, and a lot of dialogue. His writing often left things unsaid, making the reader think. One of his most famous short stories, Hills Like White Elephants, is a great example of his writing style. The story takes place at a train station in Spain. A man and a woman, named Jig, are waiting for a train. They sit at a table outside, drinking beer. They talk, but their conversation is not simple. They are discussing something serious, though they never say it directly. The man wants the woman to have an abortion. The woman is unsure. Hemingway does not tell us everything. He does not say "This is a story about abortion." Instead, he lets the characters talk, and the reader must understand what they mean. This is called the "Iceberg Theory." Hemingway believed that a story should only show the surface, like an iceberg. The deeper meaning should be hidden underneath, making the reader feel and think. The dialogue between the man and the woman is very important. The man keeps saying that the operation is "perfectly simple." He wants to convince the woman that it is no big deal. But Jig is not sure. She looks at the hills in the distance and says they look like "white elephants." This is a key moment in the story. White elephants are rare and often symbolize something unwanted. Jig might be comparing the hills to her pregnancy—something big and life-changing, something the man does not want. The way Hemingway writes makes the conversation feel real. The characters do not say everything they are thinking. They talk around the subject. The woman asks questions, trying to understand if the man will still love her after the operation. The man says he loves her, but he also keeps pushing her to do what he wants. Jig feels sad and tired. She finally asks him to "please stop talking." This shows that she is overwhelmed and does not want to argue anymore. Hemingway's writing style makes the emotions strong. He does not explain how the characters feel. He does not say, "Jig was sad and confused." Instead, he shows it through her words and actions. This is one of the most important parts of Hemingway’s "Code of Writing." He lets the reader figure things out instead of telling them directly. The setting of the story also plays a big role. The station is between two train tracks, just like the woman is stuck between two choices. One side of the valley is dry and empty, while the other side has fields and trees. This could symbolize the choice between life with a child or without one. The man sees only one choice, but Jig sees both sides. In the end, the man takes their bags to the other side of the station. He drinks alone for a while. When he returns, he asks Jig if she feels better. She smiles and says, "I feel fine. There is nothing wrong with me." But the reader knows that she is not fine. Her words do not match her feelings. This is another example of Hemingway’s style—what is not said is just as important as what is said. Hemingway’s Code of Writing makes Hills Like White Elephants a powerful story. He uses: Short sentences to keep the writing clear. Minimal description to let the reader imagine. Strong dialogue to show emotions without telling them directly. The Iceberg Theory to hide the deeper meaning under simple words. This story is not just about a conversation. It is about relationships, choices, and the way people communicate without saying everything. Hemingway’s writing makes us feel the tension, even though he never describes it directly. That is what makes his style unique and timeless. -------- 🙏 Support the Channel: 🔸 Support via UPI: syllabuswithrohit@upi 🔸 Buy Me A Coffee: buymeacoffee.com/SyllabuswithRohit
