Nikon AI Nikkor 35mm f/2 (Significant Weaknesses, but Worth it Today?) | Round Glass Review

The Nikon Nikkor 35mm f/2.0 AI lens has some significant weaknesses. When it was released, being the only lens on the market like it, those weaknesses could be overlooked. Today, though, lens evolution has progressed considerably and left lenses like this well in the dusty past of history. For the photographer today, this lens is far from the best choice in the 35mm focal length lineup because the design, optical flaws, and overall image character are out-classed by many newer and, frankly, better lenses. The Nikkor 35mm f/2 is a lens with a limited ideal range in terms of optical performance. This is not a lens that can deliver across the aperture and focus range, nor is it a lens that can be relied on to create consistently striking images outside of its useful range. And that’s a bit unfortunate because the specs make this look like it should be something more than a lens that works best at medium-to-small apertures for zone and hyperfocal distance focusing. That’s really what this lens does well and, today, that’s just not enough. But that doesn’t mean this lens is without use or purpose. As a lens to create slightly tight landscape and cityscape images, or even for some limited architectural shooting, this lens could be very useful and worth investing in if you can find one for a fair and reasonable price.
