5 Speed Upgrade In F100… Goodbye 3 On The Tree

In this video, I’m finally saying goodbye to the factory 3-on-the-tree transmission in my 1977 Ford F100 and swapping in an M5OD-R2 5-speed manual. This truck is powered by a turbocharged Ford 300 inline-6, and adding overdrive was one of the biggest upgrades I wanted to make for drivability and cruising. To make the swap work, we upgraded from the factory 10-inch clutch to an 11-inch clutch setup, installed a custom $350 shifter, shortened the driveshaft, and modified the transmission crossmember. The goal was simple: keep the old-school feel of the truck while making it drive more like a modern pickup. I’ll walk you through the entire swap process, the parts required, the challenges we ran into, and what it took to finally get rid of the old 3-speed transmission.
