The NBA star shared his love of the game with 13-year-old Gianna, who he also called GiGi and Mambacita. The latter was a play on his own nickname, Black Mamba. Bryant coached Gigi’s AAU basketball team and they could be spotted breaking down the game together or watching his old team. Gigi had plans to play at the University of Connecticut, which has the country's most successful women’s basketball program. She dreamed of one day playing in the WNBA. Kobe & his wife Vanessa had no sons, but it didn’t matter. In this interview with Jimmy Kimmel, the late NBA star explains why Gigi was proud to carry on her dad's legacy. Kobe and Gianna were mid-flight to a basketball game on Jan 26, 2020, when their helicopter crashed near Calabasas, California. All 8 passengers and the pilot were confirmed dead.
